This post is part of a weekly series in which we get to know Sifties.
Devin Oliver is a Business Development Representative who has been with Sift Science for a year. If he could be any animal he would be a capybara, because it seems like a very cool, calm, and collected animal.
Where is your favorite place to be?
In a broad sense, the water. I’m a big fisherman — I find it very relaxing to be out in a boat, especially if I’m fishing. A lot of my fond memories from growing up are tied to going to lakes in Minnesota. It was my uncle Randy who first introduced me to fishing when he took me on a trip to Canada in second grade. I became addicted.
Who do you admire the most?
My mother. I’m a total momma’s boy. My mom had me and my brother when she was pretty young, and she was great about encouraging us with anything that we wanted to start, even if we were inconsistent with the follow-through.
What was your first car?
A Honda Civic. I somehow managed to talk my parents into leasing a new car for me. I was really lucky to have it the last two years of high school.
What’s the best vacation you ever had?
Last year, when I went to Romania to visit my best friend who moved there on a whim after graduation. I spent time with him for ten days, renting a car and driving through the country. We also visited Cluj-Napoca. It’s a cheap place to visit, so we got to do a lot of fun stuff, like go to soccer games. We even picked up hitch-hikers along the way.
I hear your mom works at a zoo…
Yes! She’s the Executive Director of the Omaha Zoo Foundation. She directs a team focused on fundraising efforts, while she works with bigger donors. Growing up, it was cool to have a mom who worked at the zoo. Whenever I brought a friend, we got to go on a behind-the-scenes tour and hang out with various animals like penguins and Indian rhinos.
