What’s the best vacation you ever had?

Last year I went on a 12-day boat trip to Indonesia and surfed a bunch of different waves. Indonesia has some of the best waves in the world.

Do you have a secret talent?

I can recognize and memorize song lyrics really well. I can hear the first 10 seconds of a song and identify the song and artist.

I hear that you ran a boutique hotel in Nicaragua…

I was living in Ecuador and was looking for a way to stay in Latin America a bit longer. My requirements were to find a place that was closer to my home in the U.S, and that had good waves.

That’s when I decided on Nicaragua. I emailed every surf resort twice, asking for work. I had the opportunity to revive a hotel that had previously failed. When I arrived, there was a family squatting there that I had to ask to leave. They said if they left then I had to take their pregnant dog — so I inherited a pregnant dog. Overall, it was a great experience running the hotel. I learned and worked a lot, and it was really rewarding to watch a business grow. It made me realize how much I enjoyed serving people.
