This is part of a monthly series in which we get to know Sifties.
Adrienne Lumb is our Web Strategy Manager, who has been with Sift Science for over a year. If she could eat just one food for the rest of her life, it would be spinach! She eats it twice a day and likes the way it makes her feel. Kinda like Popeye the Sailorwoman.
Where is your favorite place to be?
Oh, that’s easy: the dance studio. I dance at four different studios: Alonzo King Lines Ballet, ODC, Dance Mission Theatre, and Dogpatch Dance.
What superpower would you want to have and why?
To turn inanimate objects into animate objects. It would be cool if that bottle of Purell over there (*points at bottle nearby*) just sprouted arms and legs and got up and started dancing. Or if fruits and veggies could come to life and talk to you. Although that might be kind of sad because they’d be afraid of getting eaten. So maybe nothing we would eat. Anyway, you’d always have something fun to interact with.
Where were you born?
A small town in Southern Indiana. Basically a cornfield. But a nice cornfield. It was very wholesome.
What’s the best vacation you ever had?
It was more of an adventure. When I was 18 I sold everything I had – which wasn’t much – and used all my savings from babysitting, mowing lawns, and working at my dad’s car shop, and backpacked around Europe solo for the summer. It was somewhat impulsive but I pulled it off, and that made me happy. I got a Eurorail pass and stayed in hostels. It was very formative and gave me confidence as a young woman; I did everything myself, planned out train schedules, figured out my itinerary. I met so many people and was exposed to different cultures. I felt really inspired and it gave me a lifelong passion for travel and exploring the world.
You mentioned that you’re a dancer. How long have you been doing that, and do you have a favorite dance?
I’ve been dancing since I was a little kid; I used to run around the house in purple tights dancing to Ziggy Stardust, thinking I was David Bowie. But I love modern dance the most – it’s very expressive and emotive. Recently, I’ve gotten into Samba. We dance to a group of live drummers; it’s fierce and so fun, and transports you somewhere exotic and super cool, like a tropical dancehall in Brazil.
